Pintados de Pasi Festival is one of the best festivals in the Province of Iloilo and as well as in the Philippines. This started way back in March 1998 in commemoration of the Cityhood of Passi. It is the Passinhons way of showcasing their rich culture and that of the Panayanons in general, their way of life, and to bring awareness to the people that Pintado culture existed during pre-Spanish era. These are exhibited through dramatization by the dancers with artistic body painting which represents the Pintados in aggressively choreographed street dancing with colorful decoration and props, and accompanied by loud drum beats.
Why Pintados de Pasi?
It is Pintados de Pasi because they want to revive the culture of Panayanons through a festival being celebrated in Passi every March that coincides with their cityhood. Pintados de Pasi depicts the legend on how Panay was discovered by the Spanish conquistadors and how Passi got its name. The Spaniards were actually fascinated by the inhabitants of Panay whom they called pintados. These are the men that have tattoos on their body. These tattoos signify their status as a warrior. The more they have it, the higher their status will be. Even women during those times have tattoos as well. Passi got its name when these conquistadors asked an old woman with tattoo winnowing pounded rice in Spanish if what the place is called. Since she did not get what they were talking and assumed that they were asking about what is in the basket, she actually answered “pasi” which means- unhusked rice. From then on, the Spaniards called the place Pasi and eventually became Passi.
The festival is a weeklong celebration that does not just attract locals but as well as national and international guests. Aside from the tribe competition which is the highlight of the celebration, you can also witness beautiful women vying to be crowned as the Bb. Pintados. You can as well enjoy the mouthwatering foods in the food festival; enjoy the Karosa Parada & Carabao Painting Contest, Sinadya sa Suba / Pinta Lawas and other activities that will make you enjoy your visit. March is more fun in Passi City! Come and Experience Pintados de Pasi and be merry!
